COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTV) - A trooper was reportedly hit by a suspected DUI driver on Interstate 77 in South Carolina early Sunday morning.

Senior Trooper Mitchell Williams Jr., the person struck during the traffic stop, was rushed to Prisma Health Richland for evaluation and treatment. He has since been released.

Records showed 35-year-old Alex Bookert, the man accused of hitting Williams, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and endangering services personnel.

What happened

The collision reportedly happened around 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, along I-77 near mile marker 9 in Richland County.
