A South Carolina Highway Patrol is recovering after being hit while conducting a traffic stop, and the driver accused of hitting him faces multiple charges.

According to the Highway Patrol, Senior Trooper Mitchell Williams, Jr. (Troop 1 Post D – Richland) was assisting another trooper with a traffic stop on I-77 northbound (near the 9 mile marker) at around midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning.

A truck, hauling an enclosed trailer, ran off the side of the roadway into the median and struck Senior Trooper Williams with the driver’s side mirror.

The driver of the truck, 35-year-old Alex Bookert, was arrested after showing signs of impairment, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Bookert faces charges of driving under the influence and endangering emergency services per
