Two people died Monday as a result of injuries sustained in an early-morning house fire in South Toledo.

Just before 6:30 a.m., emergency crews received a report of fire in the rear of a home in the 3000 block of Dorian Drive. The first crews on scene reported fire and heavy black smoke pouring from the two-story house, said Pvt. Sheldon Collins, the department’s public information officer.

They also found a man, whom neighbors had pulled from the home, on the front lawn. Medics started life saving efforts, and he was subsequently taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Fire crews battling the blaze then found a woman inside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
