APEX, N.C. (WNCN) - For decades, the idea of the Rainbow Bridge has offered comfort to grieving pet owners with the notion that their beloved animals, who've passed away, are waiting for them on the other side.

In the town of Apex, the Rainbow Bridge is real. In a shady spot beneath a canopy of leaves, a brightly colored bridge holds memories of love and loyalty.

A sign encourages people to "Honor and remember our four-legged family members," by placing collars on the bridge's rails, and a poem reads "No longer by my side/ Forever in my heart/ We will meet again at the Rainbow Bridge/ And we will never be apart."
