The ACT Education Minister has blamed directorate system problems for school budget blowouts as staff anxiously wait for news about their 2026 jobs.

In a statement to the Australian Education Union, Yvette Berry said "the current budget situation has been caused by system-level management issues".

In July, principals were called into a meeting after 77 out of 92 schools were projected to run over budget.

Telopea Park School principal sent out an email to staff explaining schools had been asked to reduce their expenditure to help the ACT government's budget deficit, which the government later said was not the case.

Ms Berry told The Canberra Times she originally thought overspending could be fixed by changes to school resources.
