On Monday at 3:17 p.m. a rip current statement was issued by the National Weather Service valid for Tuesday between noon and 8 p.m. for Brooklyn and Queens as well as Suffolk and Nassau counties.

"Dangerous rip currents expected," adds the weather service. "The high rip current risk may extend into Wednesday."

"Life-threatening rip currents are likely for all people entering the surf zone. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water," describes the weather service. "If you enter the surf zone, always have a flotation device with you and swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current.
