To hear Mayor Eric Adams tell it, the city’s economy has never been stronger.

“We broke the record 10 times, over and over again. We have more jobs in the city than in the city’s history — 4.6 million jobs,” the mayor said last month at an event at the Manhattan Institute.

Private sector jobs are in fact at record highs, and the tourism sector remains strong. But storm clouds appear to be gathering: Recent reports, including a front page New York Times story, have raised alarm bells about the city’s job growth, which has flatlined in recent months. Tourism forecasts have been revised downward.
