HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn), has joined a group of U.S. Senators reintroducing a bill that would help make it easier for student loan borrowers qualify for food assistance.

The bill, called the Student Loan Deduction Act, would allow households utilizing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to deduct monthly payments on federal and private student loads from their income when calculating eligibility.

Blumenthal joins Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), part of the Senate Finance Committee, as well as Sens. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill), Kristen Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) in endorsing the bill.
