CROWN POINT — A Gary man is on trial this week in the alleged murder of his wife during a domestic dispute in 2022.

Ellis Bishop, 69, faces one charge of murder and a firearm enhancement in the death of his wife, Victoria Staples-Bishop, 60. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of 85 years in prison.

A Lake Criminal Court jury heard opening arguments from the prosecution and defense Monday afternoon. Deputy Prosecutor Veronica Gonzalez told the jury they would hear testimony from familial witnesses, law enforcement, an emergency room doctor, a firearms expert and a crime scene investigator about the Oct. 8, 2022, homicide of Staples-Bishop, who was shot in the abdomen inside the couple's home in the 2300 block of Marshalltown Lane.
