NORMAN — Former Oklahoma running back Rotnei Anderson died Sunday night, according to a Facebook post from Sooners Helping Sooners, OU football’s alumni support organization.

A Dickinson, Texas, native, Anderson played at OU from 1984-88 and was a part of Barry Switzer's 1985 national championship team. Anderson rushed for 1,237 yards and seven touchdowns during his college career. As for his uniquely spelled first name? His mother changed it a month after he was born.

“It used to be spelled R-o-d-n-e-y," Anderson told the Oklahoman in 1987. "But my mother hopes one day I'll be something, and with my name like it is now it will be unique and people will remember me."
