Neighbours reported gunshots and “gut-wrenching screaming” at the scene of a house fire in Brisbane’s east before police shot a man on the property.

Emergency services arrived shortly after 9.15am on Tuesday to reports of a house fire on Cabanda Street, in Wynnum West.

Cabanda Street resident Ava Riverstone told 4BC she heard fire alarms and “gut-wrenching screaming” coming from the house before emergency services arrived, as well as gunshots from the property’s backyard.

“I was in my house when I heard the fire alarms go off,” Riverstone said.

“They were going on for a couple of minutes and then there was someone yelling, ‘Help me, help me’.”

She said after emergency services arrived, all the residents seemed to have escaped the fire, as the entire structure was engulfed.
