New Zealand police are combing through a remote campsite buried in rugged bush where they found two children alone on Monday, hours after their fugitive father was shot dead following almost four years on the run.
Tom Phillips was killed on a country road south of Auckland in front of one of his children on Monday morning, after police laid road spikes to stop his quad bike following his suspected burglary of a nearby farm supplies store.
His death prompted an urgent search for Phillips’ two remaining children, who were eventually found hidden at a campsite about two kilometres from the road where Phillips died.
Police found the children there about 4.30pm, uninjured and in good health.
