Citing concerns over future lawsuits connected to reactions to the recent property tax reassessment, Newark's leaders voted to not split their tax rates between businesses and residential properties.

The move runs counter to the decision made by their home Christina School District , along with New Castle County, which have chosen in different proportions to tax businesses at a higher rate than residential properties.

The recent reassessment, the first since 1983, generally has had the effect of raising property taxes for residents at a higher rate than businesses, as the value of residential properties have jumped higher than their commercial counterparts, according to the work of Tyler Technologies, on behalf of New Castle County.
