MEDORA, N.D. — “Fall colors” takes on a new meaning each autumn as the hopeful pilots of bright hot air balloons return to the Badlands, hopeful for a chance to soar over the Little Missouri River. The Medora Balloon Rally returned for its 23rd year on September 6-7, with twelve pilots from across the United States convening in Medora and hoping to launch their hot air balloons during the event. All the pilots had flown in the Badlands previously and each was excited to return for another year of fun.
Unfortunately, inclement weather, specifically wind speeds, created unsafe conditions for the pilots to lift off during the event. While the ground speed of wind may only be a small number, a pilot must also consider the altitude a hot air balloons reaches during flight.
