Florida football coach Billy Napier said he spoke with defensive tackle Brendan Bett following an unsportsmanlike penalty for spitting on an opposing player.

“I think that the kid is remorseful,” said Napier in a press conference on Monday, Sept. 8. “I think he feels as if he let the team down. I do think he has, in general, it was out of character for him. He made a mistake, and he compromised the team. He made a selfish decision. He misrepresented our fans, our alumni, the university.”

The penalty came during the Gators’ 18-16 loss to South Florida , which led to his mid-game ejection. Napier said he has not decided whether to suspend Bett in the upcoming game against LSU on Saturday, Sept. 13, but will apologize to the team and publicly as well as to the USF player he spat on.
