It is the question captivating New Zealand and the world − how did a fugitive who disappeared into the rugged wilderness evade capture for nearly four years?

Tom Phillips’ ability to survive in the North Island’s dense bushland and hills was all the more remarkable given that he was no lone wolf, responsible only for his needs.

When he vanished in December 2021, he took his three children − the youngest of whom was just five years old at the time − following a custody battle with their mother.

His life as a fugitive came to an abrupt and violent end in the early hours of yesterday when he was shot dead by police.
