A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon at around 10:30 p.m. local time on Monday night, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Two more tremors struck the area soon afterwards, measuring at 3.3 magnitude and 4.9 magnitude. The first and largest quake had a depth of around 8.5 miles.

There was no tsunami threat reported.

"This event is identified as the potential mainshock of an earthquake sequence," the USGS said in its notice of the original larger quake.

The quakes were recorded approximately 102 miles west-southwest of Port Orford, Oregon.

Further south, near Pearblossom, California, around 50 miles from Los Angeles, a small 3.3 magnitude temblor struck at around 10:50 p.m. local time on Monday, September 9.
