They have developed one of the best high school sports rivalries in the Coastal Empire, and the South Effingham and Effingham County softball teams are both looking to make their way back to Columbus to compete in the Class 5A Elite Eight at the end of October.
Last season the rivals were split up into subregions, with South Effingham in the Region 1-5A South division, and Effingham County competing in the North division. The teams didn't meet in the regular season last year, but played for the Region Championship with South Effingham winning 8-5 in an 8-inning affair. Effingham County avenged that setback by beating the Mustangs 12-4 in Columbus to advance to the Class 5A Final Four.
