Portobello rugby youth academy got a measure of reward for setting up a new section designed to engage teenage players when they began their Scottish Youth Cup campaign with a 67-19 win at Greenock Wanderers.
Concerned that too many players might drift away from the game parents – not all of whom had played rugby but appreciative of the sport’s ethos – decided to act by arranging an autonomous group still connected to the parent club.
This means fund raising etc is very much in the youth group’s own hands.
Reward for the victory at Greenock in the team’s first competitive tie at under-16 level is a home encounter with West of Scotland on the weekend of September 20-21.
