Gun ownership should come with the same responsibilities as operating a vehicle. We require training, testing, and licensing for something as ordinary as driving a car. Yet, for firearms — tools designed to kill — we have fewer safeguards than we do for fishing. That makes no sense.

A practical model exists: the driver’s license. We should treat gun ownership the same way.

Training first: every gun owner should complete a class on safe use and secure storage.

Prove competence: just as drivers must pass a road test, owners should demonstrate safe handling before receiving a license and gun lock.

Special licenses for special weapons: higher-risk firearms, like higher-risk vehicles, should require additional training.
