ROUND ROCK, Texas - Texas State Representative James Talarico announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate early Tuesday, launching a campaign he says will take power back for working people in a system rigged by billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians.
This sets up a high-profile matchup against U.S. Rep. Colin Allred as Democrats look for a challenger to long-serving Republican Sen. John Cornyn.
Talarico, 36, is an eighth-generation Texan, former middle school teacher, and Presbyterian seminarian. He ran for the Texas House in 2018, flipping a district Donald Trump had won just two years earlier.
Tuesday evening, Talarico will hold a kick-off rally in his hometown of Round Rock.
