Pictures of the "makeshift" campsite deep in the New Zealand bush where the two missing children of fugitive Tom Phillips were found following a dramatic police shootout have been released.

Phillips was shot dead by police in the early hours of Monday morning after nearly four years on the run from authorities, with him and his three children having disappeared into the bush on the country's north Island in 2021.

Police had been alerted to suspected burglary in the township of Piopio in the Waikato region about 2.30am (local time) before Phillips and one of his children, believed to be his eldest child Jayda, 12, were stopped by police road spikes while riding a quadbike.
