Apple picking season is here.
Austin Griggy, a general manager at Arrowhead Orchard in Paris Township, said some of the crop benefited from a wet spring in Stark County, which pushed things forward for the earlier varieties, like Lodi, Early Golden and White Transparent.
"They're about two weeks ahead of schedule," he said. "We have a lot of apples right now and pretty large size due to the early rain in the season."
But Griggy said the drier weather in August had the opposite effect on the apple varieties coming later this season, like Gala, Fuji, Portland and Evercrisp.
"The early varieties came off the orchard the best," he said. "As we go later into the season with no rain, it's slowing down our apples and they're not sizing up fast enough, so they're not coming off the tree as fas
