National Weather Service survey teams confirmed a tornado touched down in four Massachusetts communities on Saturday. But how do they figure out if it was one tornado or multiple?

NWS said a lower-range EF-1 tornado touched down in Paxton and Holden at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday. The NWS later confirmed that EF-1 tornadoes also touched down in the towns of Berlin and Stow. Latest Forecast

"We don't know yet if this was one tornado or several, but it's likely going to end up being four," StormTeam 5 Chief Meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon said.

The damage needs to be more than two miles apart for it to be considered its own tornado.
