MESQUITE, Texas — A North Texas father who was trying to defend his son from being assaulted by another child was shot by one of the children involved in the incident, police said.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Mesquite in the 2500 block of Helen Lane, according to a police news release.

Police said two juvenile male suspects started a fight with two other juvenile males and began assaulting one of the kids. While this happened, the other kid went home to get a parent, according to police.

When the kid returned with his father and older brother, one of the kids who started the fight took out a gun and shot the father in the shoulder, police said. The suspect ran away before police got there.
