Four weak tornadoes touched down in Central Massachusetts Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, which chalked the twisters up to a severe thunderstorm that tore through the area .
NWS Boston confirmed a brief EF1 tornado hit Paxton over the weekend, followed by a second touchdown in Holden. The agency also reported additional EF1 tornadoes in Berlin and Stow.
With estimated gusts in the 86 to 110 mph range, EF1 tornadoes are the second-lowest intensity rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. However, NWS Boston said the intensity of the tornadoes in Paxton and Holden were “on the lower end of that range.”
Saturday’s storm wreaked havoc in some parts of Central and Western Massachusetts, downing trees , causing power outages and road blockages , and damaging homes.
