LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Nine months after Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg unveiled ambitious plans to redesign the city’s Belvedere, the project is now seeing a scaled-back vision due to safety and cost concerns.

Initial renderings released in January, created by London-based design architecture firm Heatherwick Studio, pictured a bold reimagining of the 5.5-acre public space perched above the Ohio River and Interstate 65. However, project leaders said building over the river would be prohibitively expensive and unsafe.

“We realized that building that close to the river and over an interstate system is incredibly expensive,” Mayor Greenberg said. “So I think you’ll see some of that moving south to over the parking garage.”
