A Columbia resident has died and another is in critical condition following an early morning house fire Monday, Sept. 8.

The Columbia Fire Department responded at about 1:50 a.m. to a single-story residence in the 4700 block of Derby Ridge Drive, where flames were showing. Fourteen units and 28 personnel responded and "performed an aggressive ventilation-enter-search procedure," the department said.

Fire Station One's four-person ladder truck crew split into two units to conduct a faster search by going in through separate bedroom windows to find any occupants.

Two adults were found in a bedroom within 30 seconds and were removed. Emergency medical services and CFD personnel quickly responded with CYANOKIT to try to counteract the toxic material cyanide in the smoke.
