Voters will choose the successor to Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Virginia) in a special election Tuesday between Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw, the Democratic nominee and Connolly’s former chief of staff; and Republican Stewart Whitson, a legal director at a conservative think tank.

Walkinshaw, whom Connolly endorsed shortly before he died of esophageal cancer in May, emerged from a crowded primary to win the Democratic nomination in June. He is widely favored to win in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, a deep-blue seat in the D.C. suburbs which has borne the brunt of President Donald Trump’s federal government cuts.
