ROCKFORD, Ill. — A historic Rockford sports venue is getting a major upgrade thanks to a women's baseball nonprofit organization.

The International Women's Baseball Center (IWBC) protects, preserves, and promotes all sides of women's baseball. On Tuesday, they were given grants totaling $2.35 million from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation , led by New York Mets owner Alex Cohen, and the Amazin' Mets Foundation , the Mets' charity branch. They want to use those donations to improve Beyer Stadium and the area around it.

The park surrounding Beyer Stadium will be named Maybelle Blair Park in honor of baseball icon and IWBC founder Maybelle Blair. New bleacher seating will be named the Cohen Bleachers, and the press box will be named after the Amazin' Mets Foundation.
