IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) —

The Iowa City Police Department has arrested a woman in a death investigation from 32 years ago, KCRG reports .

Police say on December 21, 1992, the body of a baby boy was found at the Iowa City Landfill. The Iowa City Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation launched an extensive investigation into the death of Baby John Doe.

The circumstances then around both the birth and death were unclear, along with limitations in DNA technology.

Now though, because of DNA testing advances, the case was reopened in October 2020.

Investigators determined the mother of the child is 58-year-old Cindy Sue Elder, formerly known as Cindy Sue Eckrich. Elder was 26 years old when the birth and death happened.
