CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - State prosecutors will not seek a new trial for a South Carolina man recently cleared of convictions for assault and robbery.
Third Circuit Solicitor Chip Finney confirmed to WIS that he has formally dismissed remaining charges against Michael Pearson.
Pearson was freed Aug. 28 after serving 15 years in prison for a 2010 assault and robbery he insisted he had nothing to do with. A judge ruled to vacate his conviction, which resulted in a 60-year prison sentence. Pearson was later released after posting bail.
Finney told WIS that he filed dismissal notes on Monday, with each count citing “new evidence discovered” and that the decision to dismiss charges was made “under prosecutorial discretion.”
