ONEIDA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- After sitting vacant for over 20 years, the Hotel Oneida will finally be put to rest.

President John F. Kennedy was the most famous guest to stay at the Hotel Oneida.

"The demolition started August 9. They are focusing on the interior work right now," said the Oneida City Manager, Kyle Lovell. "They're doing a bunch of asbestos mitigation, trash haul outs, exterior clean up, a little bit. There's going to be a methodical approach to the renovation work."

The boarded-up windows and crumbling walls of the hotel will be coming down in the summer of 2026.

Going up in its place is a new Shaughnessy's restaurant, which has a location in downtown Syracuse, connected to an Irish pub with the same name. Six apartment units will also be built in the former hotel's space
