Work is underway on what Ontario’s energy minister Tuesday called a “nation-building” project, creating a new transmission line between Sarnia-Lambton and Chatham-Kent.

“It’s about building the energy security we need,” Stephen Lecce said, during a ceremonial groundbreaking for Hydro One’s 64-kilometre, $472-million St. Clair transmission line project, from the old Lambton generating station site in St. Clair Township to the Chatham switching station.

When the project – which also involves converting a switching station in Wallaceburg to 230 kilovolts – finishes in 2028, it’ll mean another 450 net megawatts of power in the region, enough to power a city the size of London, officials said.
