WASHINGTON, D.C. (WDBJ) - From deepfakes to scammers, we’ve reported on the many dangers of Artificial Intelligence when put in the wrong hands.

But what if, when put in the right hands, it could help save lives? A doctor at Children’s National Hospital and researchers at Virginia Tech are working on a program that could do just that.

Emergency department overcrowding puts a huge strain on hospital staff and can cause further damage to people who need treatment.

“Every fall, this has been an ongoing problem, as kids go back to school and get sick; it becomes very challenging to identify the times in the emergency department where we’re going to be most resource-strapped,” Doctor Kenny McKinley explained. He works in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children’s National Hospital.
