U.S. Steel is seeking changes to what particulate matter emissions are allowed at its Gary Works steel mill after installing new equipment.

The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker recently started up a new pig iron caster at Gary Works and says its air permit should reflect the actual emissions and not its initial projections.

“The original permit application was submitted prior to construction and conservatively estimated emissions using available data from similar, but not identical processes to pig iron casting," spokesman Andrew Fulton said. "Because these assumptions were necessary, the permit required U. S. Steel to validate them through emission testing.”
