The man prosecutors believe was murdered for refusing to hand over his backpack was carrying toiletries, his birth certificate, an empty 7-Eleven food box and Febreeze.

In his pockets, Jordan Jacques-Vetten also had cigarette butts and an ID card from a Calgary homeless shelter.

Robert Matthews, 27, is on trial for second-degree murder. He is one of two people accused of killing Jacques-Vetten in 2023.

The second person was a youth at the time of the shooting and can only be identified as CW, in order to comply with the Youth Criminal Justice Act. His trial has taken place, and the judge is set to deliver his verdict later this month.
