SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Severe weather declines sharply in the month of September, but it does happen. Meteorologist Scot Mundt has a look at some of the numbers.
Showers and storms moved through eastern KELOLAND this morning. While not everyone got wet, we did have a couple of stronger storms that contained heavy rain and even an isolated severe thunderstorm warning in northeast South Dakota.
Over the past 5 years, South Dakota averages 1 tornado report, 18 severe wind reports, and 6 severe hail reports.
Of course, this doesn't take in account the Sioux Falls tornadoes from 2019. That's when three EF-2 tornadoes moved through southern Sioux Falls just before 11:30 p.m. on the night of September 10th. These tornadoes were within a line of thunderstorms that also brought straight-lin
