BISHOPVILLE, S.C. — Ms. Jamika Knox says she always knew she wanted to teach at an early age.

"My elementary school teacher had taken us from the school and walked us in the neighborhood, and I'm like, teachers can do this? As a child, I didn't understand it. I didn't see the bigger picture. As an adult, I see it. She took learning outside of the classroom and made it real world," says Ms. Knox.

But her career path took a different turn.

"I ended up taking care of a family member. But it took me into the path of hospitality and property management. So that was really my background. But my mother always said, you always said you were going to be a teacher, and she never let it go," says Ms. Knox.
