SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Passing clouds on this Tuesday kept temperatures cooler than normal once again, still hinting at this coming fall. That’s something Kelly McGowan, horticultural field specialist with the University of Missouri Extension, and others are getting excited about.

“Everyone’s looking forward to fall,” McGowan said. “It’s been a long, hot summer, and we’re looking forward to cooler temperatures.”

In some parts of Springfield, other signs of fall are showing up, some trees changing color from their vibrant greens. McGowan says that usually happens when chlorophyll production, responsible for food for the trees, shuts down. However, a color change this early is a sign of tree stress from our dry August and September so far, even after a wet June and July.
