AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Panhandle is rich in agriculture, with the area being filled with hard-working farmers and ranchers who provide for the community every day. One of the hardest-working communities is also reported to have one of the highest suicide rates.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the suicide rate for the agriculture industry is 47.0 males per 100,000 which in comparison to 32 males per 100,000 in the non-institutionalized working population.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention West Texas Chapter mental health professional volunteer MacKenzie Lockhart explained that when it comes to farmers and ranchers, they can be resilient to get help with their physical health, so she can imagine it's the same with their mental health.
