The Cahoon Museum of American Art is highlighting the striking artistry of sign-making in its show, “Taverns to Trades: American Folk Art Signs,” opening September 17 and running through December 21.

A rich history of Cape Cod, Nantucket and the South Coast region is brought back to life through signs that reflect the trades and travel destinations of their time. The exhibition encompasses more than 200 years of sign-making history, showcasing a diverse range of woodworking, painting, gilding and welding techniques developed by skilled craftspeople and artisans.

Inspired by these historic examples, contemporary artists Jeff Dinardo of Dinardo Vintage Signs and Pete Vogel of Nutmegger Workshop in Maine are continuing these traditions through various artistic and antiquing processes. This
