YORK COUNTY, Pa. — A shortage of truck parking across Pennsylvania is forcing drivers onto highway shoulders, ramps and unsafe areas, creating dangerous conditions for both truckers and other motorists.
Just off I-83 in York County, rows of tractor-trailers fill 83 Travel Plaza, one of the few available parking areas. For drivers like Aharon Golden, finding a legal place to stop before his federally mandated hours run out is a daily challenge.
“Sometimes, we run out of hours, and we need somewhere to park,” Golden said. “There’s penalties when we’re driving past a certain amount of time, so we just have to park on the side of the road or wherever’s closest.”
