RICHFIELD, Minn. — A Richfield man is now charged with second-degree murder in his roommate's violent death.

Prosecutors laid out their case in a criminal complaint against 37-year-old Shay Michael Benson, who called 911 to report the death.

Richfield police officers responded shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, after Benson called 911 to report finding a woman lying in the shower with "her head cracked open."

When police arrived, they found the victim with heavy bleeding from a large laceration on her forehead, through which they could see her skull. Officers said both of the woman's eyes were black and swollen shut. An examination would later show her nose was also broken.
