CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family of the woman fatally stabbed on a LYNX Blue Line train in August is calling for change as they remember her life and legacy.

Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was on her way home from work on Aug. 22 when Decarlos Brown , who didn't know her, fatally stabbed her with a pocket knife. The two had no interaction before the stabbing, according to an affidavit.

In a statement, Zarutska's family called her death "tragic and preventable," and said she was just minutes away from home. She was working full-time at a Charlotte pizzeria while simultaneously attending community college in efforts to improve her English.
