DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) -- A Dothan man who police say has "mental health issues" was taken into custody after allegedly threatening to blow up a local church.

Major Will Glover with the Dothan Police Department tells WDHN the man was standing in his yard next to Southside Baptist Church on Cottonwood Road with two grenades strapped to a "ballistic vest."

Major Glover says the man was making threats to blow up the church, and hostage negotiators were able to talk him down after a 30-minute standoff.

The man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital's mental health ward for treatment.

The bomb squad cleared the man's house and the church for any explosives.

It is unknown if the man will face charges.

The nearby Dothan Preparatory Academy was placed on lockdown as a precaut
