BINGHAMTON, N.Y (WIVT/WBGH) – It's Direct Support Professionals Week and DSPs are being celebrated for all the work they do to support individuals with disabilities.

The New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities Deputy Commissioner for Administration Adrienne Mazeau says DSPs are imperative.

"DSPs are the backbone of the developmental disability system," says Mazeau. "They provide that hands on support to help people live independently or just to get through with their daily tasks."

Many DSPs work with residents who live in community homes. Today the Blackstone Avenue Community Home in Binghamton had an ice cream social to celebrate their DSPs, such as Widmy Leveille-Orion who says helping individuals work towards their goals and seeing them grow is very rewarding.
