LANSING, MI — Legislation introduced in the State House and State Senate could result in Grand River Avenue in East Lansing being renamed after a Spartan legend.

If it passes, Grand River Avenue — from North Harrison Road to Hagadorn Road — would become known as “Magic Johnson Way.”

The stretch of road runs from west to east just north of the Michigan State University campus, where Earvin “Magic” Johnson attended as a student, helping bring the school its first national title in basketball in 1979.

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (R-Jackson) and State Sen. Michael Webber (R-Rochester Hills) both introduced legislation on Wednesday, Sept. 10 to rename the road, honoring Johnson.
