KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Horse Haven of Tennessee is once again living out its mission: rescue, rehabilitate and rehome.

Executive Director Ashley Ford said her team was ready to act quickly after receiving a call from investigators in Fentress County on Monday.

"We were able to get a team together in 90 minutes to go rescue 27 horses," Ford said.

According to a written statement from the Fentress County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found the horses living in dangerous conditions and in varying states of poor health. The sheriff’s office said the case is a reminder that animal neglect will not be tolerated and that those responsible will be held accountable.

Ford said the work starts once the horses are safely removed from the property.
