MT. VERNON, Ill. (WSIL) — A portion of I-57 is closed in Jefferson County due to a crash and a hazardous material cleanup on Thursday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office alerted the public at around 6:30 a.m. on September 11, about the closure.

The sheriff’s office said the northbound lanes of I-57 between the north split, just north of Mt. Vernon and the Dix exit will be closed for a significant amount of time due to a semi crash and to clean up hazardous materials.

Crews are on scene working to cleanup the material as of 6:30 a.m. The sheriff’s office also said there is no threat to the public.

Motorists are informed to use alternative routes during this time.
